1999 speak

Ok so I had to blog about this: right now I'm in a lecture at my university and the lecture is in dutch. So the guy keeps on throwing in words (in english) like 'corporate data model', 'context sensitive' and of course everyone's favorite 'return on investment'. So first up why do people insist on using these words as if it still is 1999. Second why do people use a language other than their own? Especially in lectures throwing in these words is meaningless. This could all be frustration on my part, sure hope it isn't a trend coming to hunt us from the past.

We have a venue for Barcamp Amsterdam! Thanks to Willem Velthoven the head honcho at Mediamatic we can use their workshop space and kitchen! We only have room for about 40-50 people so sign up! This thing is hot. And I want one. The only thing that disappoints me besides the fact that my 1G iPod mini has become irrelevant, is that my remote cannot be connected to the nano, so that's a shame. This would be my third iPod after the mini and the shuffle. Is this bad? Nah! The nano is hot ;-)

Google has just launched a new service called Sidebar, It will be used to display information on the desktop like email, RSS headlines, weather, stocks, and desktop search in addition to any other content the users are viewing like photos or websites, or even a scratch pad.

What I am wondering is: "where's the mac version?".
Though we on the mac have dashboard and konfabulator for our widget(like) needs, Googles desktop offerings like sidebar have been mostly WindowsXP-only which is a bit of shame.

Flock has landed.

Flock has landed. Chris Messina and crew are working on flock, a social networking browser built upon Firefox. Features include drag and drop blogging, integrated with social networking services like flickr and del.icio.us. This is very exciting besides firefox as a lightweight browser and tabbed browsing and supporting the w3c standards there has been little innovation in the browser area. Flock seems like a fitting browser for the Web2.0 era.

People visiting Barcelona and who like contemporary art should (besides visiting the MACBA-CCCB contemporary art museum) visit the Joan Miro Fundacio located in the south-west of barcelona near the Olympic Pool. It is ddefinitely worth the trip and has a nice collection of art. I especially like more of his later work (late sixties and seventies).

A lead Google engineer asks companies to take webbrowsers tot the next level according to news.com. I wonder since when did Google ask for anything? They must have a googlebrowser in the works. Not to agitate Microsoft on the browserfront they are probably not releasing it yet. Still it's just a theory.

So we are in Barcelona right now and this is our appartment. It's quite large and fully furnished. It is right near the Generalitat so the location is superb. Not only that there is wifi here, actually two accesspoints, so thats great for blogging and of course uploading the photos to flickr. More to come.

IXUS 30

So I got a new camera, it's the IXUS 30 (or the SD200 as it is called in the states). I like Canon. I'm a point and click kinda guy so this camera fits my needs. This picture quality is very good and the macro function is more than decent. Apart from being a good camera it is very stylish and small. I am by no means a professional photographer but I think this picture shows the macro capabilities of the camera. I still have to put the camera to some more use but first impressions are good.

A bit of old news but nonetheless interesting. Tivo has released a SDK on sourceforge with the intention to expand services throughout the new year. Samples included in the SDK are amongst other an RSS reader, a slideshow- and weather application. Infoworld has a podcast interview with Arthur van Hoff one of the java founders. Van Hoff started Strangeberry which Tivo acquired in 2004. With the outing of CEO Mike Ramsay we will have to see how this new business model develops itself and if it is enough to save Tivo.

iPod Shuffle and its Tail

Over at The Long Tail Chris is discussing why the iPod Shuffle will not be such a success as its bigger brothers.

"You can think of the thousands of songs on your hard drive as a Long Tail of sorts. Even though you've bought, ripped, or downloaded them all, they're not all your personal "hits". Some of those tracks are songs you don't care for on albums you otherwise like; others are albums you wish you hadn't bought or ripped in the first place. And yet others are songs that you've simply grown tired of. In other words, the signal-to-noise ratio in your own collection can be nearly as variable as that in any commercial music service."

I tend to disagree and here's why. The target demographic for these flash mp3 players are the kids. And kids do have their personal "hits", their entire collection tend to exist of hits. I would even say that these are the Grokster/Kazaa users, who download the charts and put the songs on their mp3 player. Taking that into account and the brand of the iPod I do think that Apple has hitten a homerun with the Shuffle.

Tivo is in trouble, they are getting cost-compressed by other providers.

"The moral of the story: Sometimes you can accurately identify the next big thing in technology, flawlessly execute a plan to offer that technology, and still get squashed."

'Flawlessly executed' is maybe an overstatement. DVR functionality is just a commodity (and became one in a short amount of time), value added services are the way to go. The question is, does Tivo have enough time for instance to execute a video on demand strategy together with netflix? As Jonathan Schwartz says, 'I wouldn't bet against the network operators'. Comcast has a strong position and is rolling out Tivo-like services for a lower price. A video on demand service could be a way to bypass the network operators. Some further TIvo reading on Forbes. Speaking of video on demand, this is also rather thought-provoking.

I'm checking more and more into webbased apps like flickr and del.icio.us (in combination with gmail) and decided to switch completely to firefox on my powerbook. Though I really like the speed of safari and its more integrated 'feel' with osx, I like how firefox is building out into a platform. I have tried the Sage extension (an integrated RSS reader for Firefox) but find it lacking in quality to netnewswire though I like the idea of having firefox as a onestop shop. We'll see how this one rolls out.

IBM leaving the PC business

Looks like IBM is leaving the PC business. Sounds like a good idea to me, as it is barely making them any money. And after all they want to be in the services business anyway.

Back from Alanya

So I'm back from Alanya (Turkey) and it was a nice holiday. I went with my close friends for two weeks. To be honest we haven't seen much culture, we rented jeeps for one day and visited the sights. For the rest of the holiday we went out to the clubs everynight and worked on our tan.

Alanya is a nice place two weeks maybe too much though. Places of interest are the waterfalls and the fort. This was my second time in Alanya. The first time we also went up the mountains, which is definetly recommended. The clubs we went to were: Robin Hood (we were here most of the time), Zaphan (or something like that) and the Janus.

When you do visit Alanya (or Turkey for that matter) try the Doner Kebab!

Right now I'm catching up on mail and news, something going on with google :-)

Useless Powerbook

Well my powerbook is pretty much useless. I won't recharge and I don't think it's battery. Hopefully the problem is the powersypply otherwise I don't know what to do. The PB -is- pretty old, about 4 years I think. Still buying a new one is not an option. I'll be checking to see if a friends powersupply will do the trick tonight.
